GiveMeTheVIN is Proud to Present this Rare 1980 BMW M1

The M1 was developed by BMW’s motorsport division as a homologation model for FIA Group 5 sports car racing, and construction was intended to be carried out in partnership with Lamborghini before the contract between the two manufacturers dissolved. The Gianpaolo Dallara-designed spaceframe was instead built by Italian firm Marchesi, while Giorgetto Giugiaro-styled fiberglass bodywork was manufactured by Trasformazione Italiana Resina. Bodies were completed by Italdesign in Turin before being sent to Baur in Stuttgart for final assembly by hand. Road-going and racing variants were produced simultaneously, and approximately 450 units were built in total.

This example has been refinished in white with painted BMW Motorsport tri-color stripes. An M1 Procar-style front air dam has been added, and styling incorporates pop-up headlights, dual locking fuel caps, rear window louvers, and dual BMW roundels on the trailing edge of the vented buttress-style sail panels. A hand-painted “Design W. Maurer” signature is present below the right taillight. Repairs on the bumpers, paintwork on the rocker panels and mirror caps, and rock chip touch-ups were performed by Pimentel Innovations of Hayward, California, in 2017. A collection of Saint Gobain glass etchings is viewable in the gallery.

The cockpit features adjustable seats trimmed in blue leather along with a color-coordinated dashboard, center console, door panels, and carpets. The Becker Europa cassette player and door speakers were installed by Burlingame Motors in July 2017, and the center console and door panels were recovered by Acker Leather Works of Novato, California, later that month. Additional equipment includes power windows and air conditioning.

The blue leather-wrapped steering wheel frames a 9k-rpm tachometer and a 280-km/h speedometer as well as auxiliary gauges and warning lights. The six-digit odometer shows 20k kilometers (~13k miles), approximately 100 of which were added under current ownership.

The mid-mounted 3,453cc M88 inline-six features dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, dry-sump lubrication, Kugelfischer-Bosch fuel injection, Magneti-Marelli ignition, and six individual throttle bodies. Factory output was rated at 277 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque. Service performed in January 2017 included the installation of replacement coolant hoses, fuel hoses, injector lines, and heat shields.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a ZF five-speed manual gearbox and a limited-slip differential. The exhaust system was painted in January 2017.

Tools, a first-aid kit, and a reproduction owner’s manual are included in the sale along with a fire extinguisher and literature.
